Mohd Hamdi Bin Abd Shukor

Biography: Professor Dr. Mohd Hamdi bin Abd Shukor received his B.Eng. (Mechanical), with Honours from Imperial College, London and his M.Sc. In Advanced Manufacturing Technology & System Management from the University of Manchester Institute of Science & Technology (UMIST). His Doctoral study was in the field of thin film coating for biomedical applications for which he was conferred Dr. Eng by Kyoto University. He is a Fellow of the Institution of Mechanical Engineering, UK. Prof Hamdi has devoted his career in nurturing research and innovation, having more than 30 patents, and has mentored over 130 postgraduate students, particularly in the field of advanced manufacturing, materials processing and biomaterials. He has authored more than 150 ISI journals and h-index of 21. He is also a director and founder of the Centre of Advanced Manufacturing & Materials Processing (AMMP Centre), in which has grown from modest-size team of researchers and engineers to an interdisciplinary research hub. He was appointed to various leadership positions starting from the Head of department, Dean of the faculty, and the Deputy Vice Chancellor in charge of academic and international. Prof Hamdi has obtained recognition from various international and local organizations.

Biography: Shen-Ming Chen(陳生明)  received his PhD degrees in chemistry from National Taiwan University, Taipei, Taiwan. He was a visiting postdoctoral fellow with the Institute of Inorganic Chemistry, Friedrich-Alexander University Erlangen-Nuremberg, Germany in 1997. He had been an associate professor of Department of Chemical Engineering, National Taipei Institute of Technology, Taipei, Taiwan from 1991 to 1997. Since August 1997, he has been a professor of Department of Chemical Engineering and Biotechnology, National Taipei University of Technology, Taipei, Taiwan. From 2010, he has been a Distinguished professor of Department of Chemical Engineering and Biotechnology, National Taipei University of Technology, Taipei, Taiwan. He has been the Dean(Curator) of library, National Taipei University of Technology, Taiwan from 2000 to 2006 and the Director of Extracurricular Activity, office of student affairs, National Taipei University of Technology, Taiwan from 1995 to 2000.His research interest includes Nanocomposite materials research, organic electrochemistry, bioelectrochemistry, conducting polymer Electrochemistry, Nanoelectrochemistry, chemical sensors, biosensors, electrocatalysis and electroanalysis.

Speech Title:Low-Power Analog Signal Processing Techniques for Sensing Devices

Abstract. Wideband low-pass filters (LPFs) are needed in video cameras for environment sensing. Switched capacitor (SC) technology using CMOS OP Amplifiers (Amps) is promising for realizing analog video signal processors like filters because of easy integration in monolithic ICs using the CMOS technology and operation at high speed. In realizing SC filter ICs, lowering the power consumption of OP Amp is essential to avoid unstable operation.

In this talk, OP Amp’s power consumption reduction techniques are discussed. At first, some conventional OP Amp circuits for reducing power dissipation are introduced. To solve the low speed operation and high power consumption problems in conventional circuits, the two-stage CMOS OP Amp with a dynamic switching bias (DSB) circuit proposed by the lecturer and its performance by SPICE simulation will be presented. As an application example of this OP Amp, the SC non-inverting amplifier with a gain of 2 is shown. To solve problems of gain restraint and narrow-bandwidth operation at low power supply voltages due to the instability in high frequencies, the folded-cascode OP Amp with the DSB circuit newly proposed by the lecturer will be also presented. It is appropriate for operating at high speed switching covering a video signal bandwidth and achieving high gain even at low power supply voltages. Applications of this DSB OP Amp to a 2nd-order SC LPF and a 4th-order SC LPF with a sharp roll-off, operating at a switching frequency of 14.3 MHz, will be shown and the usefulness of the DSB operation be made clear. Further, the possibility of realization of higher-speed OP Amps using Carbon Nanotube FETs is introduced.

In conclusion, the lecturer will state that as the miniaturization of sensing devices advances, low power consumption techniques such as the DSB circuit should come to be important as analog signal processing circuits in sensing devices.


Dr. Hiroo Wakaumi received his B.E. degree in Electronics from Chiba University in 1973 and his Ph.D. degree in Electrical Engineering from Tokyo Metropolitan University in 2000. Until 1992, he worked at NEC Corporation. Then he joined Tokyo Metropolitan College of Technology, whose name has been changed to Tokyo Metropolitan College of Industrial Technology in 2006, where he served as a professor from 2002 until 2015. He is currently a part-time lecturer there. He is a researcher with over 44 years of experience and a teacher with over 25 years of experience. His research interests include CCDs, display devices, high-voltage MOS ICs, magnetic sensing, optical sensing, and signal processing. 

   He has been working as a reviewer of one e-Book, 7 journals and 17 international conferences from 2000 until now. He served as a session chairman in seven international conferences from 2002 until 2013.

   He was awarded the Best Invited Paper Award at the international conference CIM’07 and the Industrial Education Achievement Award from the Industrial Education Advancement Association of Japan in 2013. He has published 54 peer-reviewed papers in journals and international conferences, five books, and 83 general meeting papers including bulletins and magazines, achieving superior performance related to ICs and magnetic sensing and optical sensing/displaying systems. He served as an editorial advisory board member of a book in 2013. He is now each senior member of IEEE and IEICE, and is also a steering committee member of SENSORDEVICES, a technical committee member of ICTASI 2018, a trustee of the Japan Society of Applied Quantum Chromodynamics and a member of IAENG.


All accepted papers will be published in the digital conference proceedings which will be Indexed by  all major citation databases such as Ei Compendex, SCOPUS, Google Scholar, Cambridge Scientific Abstracts (CSA), Inspec, SCImago Journal & Country Rank (SJR), EBSCO, CrossRef,  Thomson Reuters (WoS), etc. 

A selection of papers will be chosen to be published in journals.
